Relocating to a new home requires packing and moving numerous items, each differing in value, shape, and size, from one location to another. With the added stress of selling, buying, and renting properties, it’s easy for people to neglect the careful selection of what to take or leave behind. This guide aims to help you navigate a successful move.

Preparing for a Smooth Transition

Ensure all legal matters are addressed to guarantee a seamless move-in day. Aim to have access to your new home by 1 pm. The British Association of Removers has created this guide to assist you in achieving a smooth and efficient relocation.

Steps for a Stress-Free Move

To achieve a hassle-free move by 1 pm on the day of completion, complete the following tasks within the two weeks leading up to the move:

  1. Evaluate Your Belongings

Review your property information and fixtures and fittings to decide what you want to take with you and what to leave behind.

  2. Mortgage Arrangements

If you’re securing a mortgage, ensure your legal representative withdraws the funds 24 to 48 hours before completion. Note that mortgage funds usually need to be requested five days in advance.

  3. Financial Transfers

Understand the total amount to be transferred and the timing for transferring the final funds to your legal representative.

  4. Legal Preparations

Confirm the necessary steps with your legal representative, including ordering final redemption figures for existing mortgages, conducting an official property title search, and preparing a legal statement.

  5. Paperwork Verification

Verify with your legal representative that all paperwork is complete the day before the move.

  6. Vacate on Time

Prepare to vacate your current property by 1 pm on completion day and coordinate this with your chosen removal company.

If you’re moving to a new property, ensure the current owners have completed these tasks and confirm in writing, if possible, that they will vacate the property by 1 pm.
